Matteo was 5 years old when he rode a minimoto for the first time on the San Mauro Mare circuit. Immediately his passion ignites and in 2006, at only 9 years of age, he graduates as European Minimoto Champion. In 2009 he switched to the MiniGP category, winning the MiniGP Junior 50 Italian Championship. In 2012 he won the first Moto3 European Championship in Albacete. This allowed him to enter the Moto3 World Championship the following year, the first year with Team Ongetta-Centro Seta and the following two years with San Carlo Team Italia. In 2015, when he was only 18 years old, Matteo decided to change his path.
He started again in the Italian Superbike Championship, together with BMW. Giving his best, he was able to make a remarkable performance, taking several podium places and finishing third and fourth overall in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. In 2018 he switched to the Ducati Panigale V2, confirming himself Vice-Champion. The same year he took part in the Imola round of the SuperStock 1000 World Cup, which he won, as a wild-card. The goal was always the same: to come back and win in the World Championship.
And so in 2019, thanks to Team Gresini Racing, Matteo picks up the challenge of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup, the first World Championship in history with all-electric bikes. At the last race of the season, in Valencia, Matteo became the first World Cup winner of this innovative new category. The search for the title continued, and in the following years he confirmed himself as one of the leading contenders in this class, finishing second in 2020 and third in 2021 and 2022, respectively. In 2023 Matteo will participate for the fifth consecutive year in MotoE, which, with 8 stages and 16 races is promoted to a World Championship, again with Felo Gresini Racing
